The reconnect problem

Unplug a USB microphone — to travel, to tidy cables, to move a hub — and macOS immediately selects some other input. That part is sensible. The problem is what happens when you plug it back in: macOS often doesn’t return to it. Your next call runs on the webcam or built-in mic until you notice, usually because someone asks why you sound different.

The manual fix, each time

  1. Open System Settings → Sound → Input.Select your USB microphone or audio interface.
  2. Confirm your apps follow it.Conferencing and recording apps with their own microphone picker should be set to System Default — otherwise they keep using whatever they were pinned to.

Why it comes back reliably

FlipMic remembers each ranked device by the stable identifier macOS assigns it — not by which USB port it used or what its display name is at the moment. A disconnected mic stays in your list, and when it reappears (same port or a different one, before or after a reboot), FlipMic recognizes it and restores it to its rank.

When the preferred mic is absent

Nothing breaks. The highest connected device in your list is always the default, so your list is also your fallback plan. If every ranked input is disconnected, FlipMic leaves macOS’s own choice alone until one returns.

Compatibility, stated precisely
