Quick diagnostic checklist
- Is FlipMic running?Look for the waveform icon in the menu bar. If it’s missing, launch FlipMic from Applications and consider enabling Launch at Login.
- Is the guard toggle on?Open FlipMic’s settings and confirm the toggle is enabled for the direction (input or output) you expect it to manage. An empty priority list is intentionally hands-off.
- Is the device in the list, and connected?FlipMic selects the highest connected device in each list. A device that isn’t ranked — or isn’t currently connected — won’t be chosen.
- Does System Settings agree?Open System Settings → Sound. If Input and Output show your top-ranked connected devices, FlipMic is working — and the issue is likely a specific app’s own device setting (next section).
- Is another audio utility also running? Two tools both enforcing device choices will fight each other. Run one audio guard at a time.
System default vs. an app’s own picker
This distinction resolves most “FlipMic isn’t working” reports:
- The system default is what System Settings → Sound shows. That’s what FlipMic manages.
- An app’s own picker (in Zoom, Meet, Teams, Discord, OBS, a browser site’s settings, or macOS Dictation) can point at a specific device. When it does, that app ignores the system default — and FlipMic, by design, doesn’t change per-app settings.
The test: if System Settings shows the right device but one app uses the wrong one, open that app’s audio settings and set its microphone or speaker to System Default.
Writing a support request
Include what you can from this list — it usually gets you a one-reply answer:
- Your macOS version, and whether the Mac is Apple silicon or Intel.
- What you expected to happen, and what happened instead.
- Your priority lists as configured (the device names and their order in FlipMic’s settings — a screenshot of the FlipMic window is ideal).
- What System Settings → Sound showed for Input and Output at the time.
- The app involved, if the problem shows up in a specific app.
- For purchase or download issues, the email address you used at checkout and your Stripe receipt number.
Please don’t send audio recordings or the contents of private conversations — we never need them. Device names, settings, and screenshots of the FlipMic window are enough.
